In 1980 my husband brought home a bag of clay because I was interested in clay sculpture, Years later it’s my obsession. The touch and feel of it gives me creative energy and great joy. There has never been a day that I was not happy to start a new piece of work.
My subjects have always been the native peoples of New Mexico especially northern New Mexico. I find the natives of this region and their quite dignity and beauty an inspiration to my work and I strive to make my work reflect my feelings for New Mexico, my art comes from my heart. I’ve been lucky to live in this part of the world since 1970 and have found New Mexico to be the place that gives my work its center.
I am a self- taught sculptor. I have asked a lot of questions of other artists, some of them great at their craft, I’ve read a lot of books and have developed many techniques that work for me. I have often considered formal art training but my friends and colleagues have advised against it fearing I would lose the “uniqueness” of my work.
I have sold my pieces at The Shop in Santa Fe since 1984. All of my work is one of a kind, even the tree ornaments are hand made, I never use molds. The larger pieces all have my thumb print as identification.
The only competition I have enter occurred in 2002 for the American Women Artist Association, an annual juried show. I was pleased to have been awarded the NM Award of Excellence.
I continue to follow my bliss, clay sculpture makes me happy and is my rapture, I leave my happiness in each piece I make and hope it is passed on to those that hold my work. El arte es mi vida!
